Frequently Asked Questions

• At what age can a child begin dance classes?
  Children can begin as young as 3 ½ yrs (birthday by May 31.) The class is called Creative Movement 1. It’s geared perfectly to this age and new 4-year olds learning there first dance steps. To learn about the progressions of Creative Movement into other genres, click here.
   
• Any classes for adults?
  Adults are welcome at MDS. We have fitness and dance classes for the adult. Click here for current year's offering.
   
• Where can I get more information?
  Our Class Descriptions page will explain each class style and its prerequisites. Our Policies page is a snapshot of what to expect during a MarLo season and the expectations required for participation as a family. • How do I register for classes?
  It’s easy. We have On-Line Registration for the Fall that opens on or close to Aug 1.   We also hold Open Houses in September. For this year's dates, visit our News & Calendar. We do recommend early on-line registration to guarantee class placement. Summer class registration opens mid-April.
   
• Is there a registration fee?
  There is an annual dance registration fee.  Student 1 – $50; Student 2– $40; Family Registration Cap – $85.   Adult fitness classes do not have a registration fee.
   
• What are the NEW payment options for 2024?
  Families now have the following 4 monthly tuition payment options:
  1. ACH (bank transfer).   
  2. Physical Checks payable to MarLo Dance Studio.  Due by the 8th.  
  3. Visa/Mastercard (2% Surcharge).
  4. 3% DISCOUNT is offered by semester (Sept-Dec, Jan-April) or in full .  For discount,  payment method is limited to check or by ACH.  To set up, contact Miss Maria at, marlo@marlodance.com.

• When does your fall (or summer) season begin?
  The Fall Season begins the 3rd week of September. Find the specific dates on  Calendar & News.   Summer Season is broken into three sessions. Each session lasts 2-3 weeks. Students may register for a single summer session, workshop, or dance camp.
   
• How long does the Fall Season last?
  We open the 3rd week of September and end the 3rd week of May. Details can be found on  Calendar & News .
   
• When does registration close?
  For the Fall Season, generally, October 31st. Transfer students and preschoolers may start later on case by case basis.
   
• When are the spring performances?
  Dates are posted before the Fall Session begins and are posted on Calendar & News.   We encourage all our families to mark their personal calendars with the rehearsals and performances dates provided. Detailed schedules are sent out end of March.

• Is there a discount for more than one child in a family?
  Yes, MDS has a family discount fee schedule that the entire family can take advantage of. The first hour in a family is $46 a month. Add a second hour for the same student or any household member and the family fee is now $80 month ($12 discount).
   
  Adult fitness classes do not pay monthly tuition. These classes are drop-in or punch card.   
  First Time Visitors - $12, Drop-ins - $15, Punch Card - 5/$60 or 9/100
   
• Where can I view the tuition and fees?

• What are costume fees?
  As a performing arts school, each year, MDS produces a story production (ie Cinderella, Anastasia) at the Sprague Theater. Every class plays a role that will require a costume.
  
  Approximate Wholesale Costume Fees: Creative Movement & Primary: $60/ Beginning-Advanced: $65-$80.   A $25 deposit for each class is billed November. Balance of all costumes billed January.

• What is your attendance policy?
  Like any academic subject, consistent attendance is important to your student’s success and will be increasingly important to your child moving up through the levels of progression. Click here to learn more.
   
• What should I wear to dance class?
  MDS has a uniform that varies between levels and genres. Please click here for the details. We love to help fit your student with the correct dance apparel that will facilitate their training. We maintain a stock of dancewear that can be tried on by the dancer and checked by a teacher.
   
• Are specific dance shoes required?
  Parents love that we can fit your student with the correct footwear for class. If you choose to purchase elsewhere, the style and color requirements are found here. A professional fitter should check the shoes before purchasing.

• Do you have recitals or performances?
  MarLo loves to produce story productions that the entire community supports. Our Performances page has links to view some of our past productions. Dates for each spring are posted to the Calendar and News Page.   We produce shows every May and December, bi-annually.
   
• Are dancers required to perform in the May production?
  Children and Youth are automatically included. It is simply not fun to have a child excluded.   Adults classes are usually included, but each adult is given the option to opt out.

• Is there a Nutcracker this year?
  ​MDS presents a spectacular Nutcracker every other year.  Our next holiday production will be December 2026.  Alternating years keeps the experience fun and exciting as the dancers take on new roles as their skills progress. 

• Are all students included in The Nutcracker?
  ​Auditions are held for enrolled in ballet students who are Kindergarten and up.  We also bring in outside performers and actors.  We'd love to hear of  your interest.

• Do you offer trial classes?
  Trial classes for students 12 and under are generally done in the summer. Fall classes for beginners typically fill, so there are not usually options to allow a trial.
   
• Do new students go through an assessment?
  If we have an older beginner or a transfer student, we will invite that student to a regular group class to evaluate where they are in their training. As needed, we will have them try additional classes until we evaluate a good fit.
