Class Descriptions     Fall Schedule

The following descriptions delineate our fall class break-downs.  Every August this page is updated for the next September-May studio season.

BALLET

ballet classes

Youth Levels 1-4, dancers are introduced to the foundations of classical ballet.  An emphasis on creativity and imagination help to keep young dancers engaged while learning the basics of proper ballet technique. Throughout these levels, students will develop coordination, musicality, and spacial awareness. Ballet vocabulary, classroom etiquette, and clean alignmment are introduced as dancers progress through the levels, preparing for more stuctured technical training in the future.

Youth Levels 5-8, dancers follow a progressive curriculum based on the world renowened Vaganova method of classical ballet training.  This structured syllabus develops strength, coordination, artistry, and technical precision through carefully sequenced instruction.  Ballet vocabulary and classroom etiquette continue to be reinforced while dancers progressively refine placement, alignment, musicality, and artistry as they advance through each level.

Pointe training is introducced when each dancer has demonstrated the strength, technique, alignment and maturity necessary for safe progression.  Advancement to pointe is based on individual readiness rather than age or  level.  All pointe candidates must successfully complete the Perfect Pointe System evaluation beforebeginning pointe work.

Ballet 1  - Students previously enrolled in CM4 or new students 8+.  Meets once per week.
Ballet 2  - Students previously enrolled in Ballet 1 or instructor consent.  Meets once per week.
Ballet 3  - Students previously enrolled in Ballet 2 or instructor consent. Meets once per week.
Ballet 4  Students previously enrolled in Ballet 3 or instructor consent. Class meets 2 times per week; 50 minute class.
Ballet 5-6   Class meets 2 times weekly; 90 minute class + twice monthly, Saturdays.
Ballet 7   Class meets 2-3 times weekly; 90 minute class + twice monthly, Saturdays
Ballet 8 Class meets 3 times weekly; 90 minute class + twice monthly, Saturdays

Adult Beginning Ballet is designed for adults who are new to ballet or continuing to build their foundation in the second or third year of study.  This class introduces the fundamentals of classical ballet in a supportive environment. Dancers develop proper technique, alignment, coordination, strength, and flexibility through progressive barre and center work. Exercises may be modified to accommodate each dancer's individual physical needs, allowing students to progress safely and confidently.  90-minute class.

Adult Intermediate Ballet is designed for adults with previous ballet training.  This class builds on a strong technical foundation through more challenging barre and center work. Exercises may be modified to accommodate each dancer's individual physical needs while providing an engaging and appropriately challenging experience.  90-minute class.

TINY TOTS & CREATIVE MOVEMENT

Tiny Tots is a high energy  fun course specifically designed for 2-3 year olds learning alongside their caregiver. Tots & their grownup will experience music, movement, rhythm, & other key developmental concepts through rhyming, singing, moving, & sensory activities.  

Creative Movement classes provide a joyful first introduction to dance in a fun, creative, and imaginative environment. Rooted in the fundamentals of ballet while incorporating elements of folk dance and tap, these classes are the perfect fit for little movers. Through storytelling, music, and creative exploration, dancers develop coordination, balance, rhythm, spatial awareness, motor skills, and confidence

Creative Movement 1  3 1/2 years (birthday by 5/31) - 4 years.  Curriculum alternates years for youngsters who start young.
Creative Movement 2  Second year MDS 4 year olds and 5 year olds not yet in kindergarten.
Creative Movement 3  5 year olds in Kindergarten. Class may include tap in the spring. May also be a good fit for new 1st graders.
Creative Movement 4  First graders. Class includes a combination of Ballet and Tap. This is a transitional class for future Ballet 1 and Tap 1 students

HIP HOP

Hip Hop at MDS is a vibrant, rhythm-driven street dance style characterized by dynamic movements that emphasize individuality, musicality, and personal expression. Classes focus on fundamental movement principles, incorporating bounce, rock, body isolations, wave, and groove into the foundation of the style. Levels 3-5 incorporate other individual styles including: Breaking, Popping, House, and Freestyle.   

Hip Hop 1  Introductory.  9-13 years. 
Hip Hop 2, 3, 4, 5    Instructor consent.

Adult Beginning Hip Hop is perfect for adults who are new to hip hop or looking to rediscover their love of dance.  This classexploresthe foundations of hip hop movement in an energeticand welcoming environment. Dancers build thythm, coordination, and musicality while learning foundational concepts. Each class encourages confidence, creativity, and personal expression through movement.

Adult Intermediate Hip Hop is designed for dancers with previous hip hop experience. The class builds on foundational movement through more intricate choreography and musical interpretation.  Classes encourage creativity, and confidence in a fun, challenging environment.      

                                                                       

JAZZ & CONTEMPORARY

Jazz is at MDS combines the precision and alignment of ballet with dynamic movement, rhythmic complexity, and expressive performance.   Classes focus on strength, flexibility, coordination, musicality, turns, leaps, and stylistically diverse choreography inspired by both theatrical and commercial jazz styles.

Contemporary is a dynamic and expressive movement form that builds on a strong classical foundation.  Classes draw from Graham and Horton modern dance techniques as well as floorwork training to expand versatility and strength.  Dancers are challenged to expand beyond traditional ballet lines, exploring grounded movement, contraction and release, weight shifts, and improvisation. 

Youth Jazz and Contemporary require a minimum of one ballet class per week.

Jazz 1 Requires minimum Ballet 4 level.
Jazz 2,3,4  Instructor consent.

Contemporary 1, 2,3,4  Instructor consent

Adult Jazz 1 is designed for adults with some previous dance experience.  Our new jazz class brings a fun, upbeat atmosphere while introducing dancers to classical jazz technique. Prior ballet training is encouraged, but all are welcome to join.

TAP

tap classes

Tap  is a dynamic dance form that combines rhythm, movement, and music through percussive footwork.  Rooted in the internationally recognized, Al Gilbert Tap Syllabus, our program provides a progressive, age-appropriate foundation that develops strong technique, clear sound quality, coordination, and musicality.  Each level builds a strong technical foundation with structured exercises that introduce increasingly complex rhythms, footwork, and performance concepts. Our classes explore both Broadway and Rhythm tap styles. This well-rounded training cultivates technically proficient, musically aware dancers who performwith confidence, versatility, and artistic expression. 

Tap 1  Creative Movement 4 graduates and new 8+.
Tap 2   Previously enrolled Tap 1
Tap 3, 4, 5, 6  Instructor consent.

Adult Beginning Tap is designed for dancers who are new to tap, returning after a time away, or continuing to build their foundation in their second or third year of study.  Classes focus on developing strong tap technique while reinforcing basic vocabulary, rhythm, coordination, and clear sound production.  Dancers explore elements of both Broadway and Rhythm tap in an encouraging environment that emphasizes the joy of learning. 

Adult Intermediate Tap is designed for dancers with prior tap experience who are ready to build on their technical skills. Classes draw from Broadway and Rhythm tap styles and focus on refining clarity of sound, speed, coordination, rhythmic complexity, and musicality through more challenging exercises and combinations.

ADULT  FITNESS & DANCE CLASSES

Adult Fitness are drop-in or punch card classes.   No enrollment.

Yoga-Lates

Yoga-Lates is a workout that combines the best elements of yoga and pilates. A total body toner. The Pilates elements give you strength and muscle definition while the Yoga offers flexibility and relaxation.

 

Adult Dance classes are enrollment structure.  These classes build on the previous weeks experience.  

Adult Beginning Ballet is designed for adults who are new to ballet or continuing to build their foundation in the second or third year of study.  This class introduces the fundamentals of classical ballet in a supportive environment.
